This was an interesting film from the get go. One thing I love about French cinema (good French cinema) is the contemplation of what if and the mulling over of what happens if what if should transpire. A story about the grown up lives of two children whose worlds are touched by tragedy. A boy whose life is consistently tormented: filled with abuse and scarcity. The only thing that holds him together is his art and when that is threatened he makes a choice that leads him down a toiled and twisted path to her. She whose lost a mother to murder only to end up in the arms of a murderer. The subtle irony in the story is only surpassed by the subtle aesthetics of the film. I would say that in a very untraditional way this picture is character driven. It is the externalization of the internal struggle in a way that you will not see in traditional Hollywood motion pictures. I say this because there is a third dimension to the characters and that is the ugly part of people we can all relate to but don’t necessarily want to confront.
The examination of the demons in all people no matter their social class, gender, economic status, or education is something that as of late has been cast aside. I often think that in light of what’s on the news and in the papers people don’t really seek out films that may shed light on an already grim outlook. At the end of every dark tunnel there is a light because life is dynamic and changing and even at the end of this film the dynamic changes. I don’t want to spoil it but I will say it is worth watching as we all need to get a taste of heightened reality from time to time even if that reality on the screen isn’t a reflection of our own. The players are great in this one and so is the movie as a whole. A definite must see as Gregoire Colin is just mesmerizing in this role.
