Release Date: Friday September 18, 2009 Genre: Comedy Running Time: 108 min. Director: Steven Soderbergh Cast: Matt Damon, Scott Bakula, Joel McHale, Melanie Lynskey

This was a really cool movie and it was really nice to see Matt Damon in a comedic role that worked outside of the Ocean’s movies.  Soderbergh did a great job at recreating the look of the early nineties in this pictures as he always does with a period piece.  This story is inspired by actual events detailing the life of a very interesting VP at ADM.  The names are changed or are they or not or does it even matter?  Truth is this movie is all about dialogue and the inner workings of the man it’s based on. Although the action that carries the film is funny it is the introspective dialogue between actions by the narrator/main character that really make this film.  It’s often discouraged when you’re taught about screenwriting; teachers usually tell you that you should avoid this kind of narration unless it serves the story.  I disagree with these kinds of rules simply because they limit how movies are made and how they are watched.  This film is an excellent example of the the supposed rules of cinema at work while the going against the grain.  A great movie for film students and film goers alike.

  1. Trying to decide whether to see this one or Surrogates next…this looks like it might be more intelligent. (In writing, there are no rules–but writing teachers would be out of a job if they told you that!)
    Best regards.

I saw surrogates and it does have a quality to it; haven’t decided just yet what that is but there is something there.

I think writing teachers take the easy way out, I know because I’m designing a course and it’s really hard if you give more than just a “paradigm”. But, educational systems aren’t looking to engineer indivduals…they simply want to manufacture good citizens.

Thank you for passing by my little spot in cyberland. You are always persona grata here!
