Measuring Tape Girl is the latest cinematic endeavour by Canadian filmmaker P.M. Veltri. The film deals with a milieu of issues packed into a short format centred around what is essentially a monologue. How is that possible many of you may be asking? Well, at first glance and after trying to say that fast five times you may be at a loss, but, if you’ve ever seen a P.M. Veltri film you would know that he takes that which is seemingly impossible and transforms it into a very plausible cinematic work. But of course…it all starts with a script…and what a script it is indeed. This picture is going to be like nothing else he’s ever done as it will truly bring the audience to a place where they are watching a performance based piece. This is exceptionally challenging given that people are so used to fast cuts and lots of action these days but I am confident that folks will enjoy this as much as I did watching it live.

That’s right folks AnnieG was conducting behind the scenes interviews for this film. I got to hang out a while with the crew and watch the fine oiled machine that is a P.M. Veltri production. I have to say it’s really nice to see people who are organized, actually know what they want, and are able to execute that vision. In my experience with indie films nothing ever goes to plan but this shoot totally did and everyone was right on the money and extremely professional. The wonderful Jessica Embro plays Measuring Tape Girl (the 30 something v-logger) in this film and is just amazing. I will confess now that there’s one line I got to watch her say at the shoot that literally had me teary. She was able to take me on an emotional journey take after take which makes me anxious to see her in the film when it’s all cut together. A very talented actress that I am so glad I got a chance to spend some time with as one day in the near future it’s not going to be so easy…trust me…my inner geek can sense these things.

The behind the scenes will give you a taste of what this film will look like. I must say that getting to talk to both P.M. and Jessica I really got a new perspective on a project I had already fallen in love with. The film deals with the communication breakdown that is happening on account of there being way too many means of communication. It touches upon how the digital self is creating an increasingly alienated society that relies on screens in order to emote. It’s a very vast subject matter but it’s conveyed in such a way that it would appear to be practically seamless. It would only make sense that while talking about the digital self Veltri would incorporate themes of body image and self esteem which I believe men and women will be able to relate to on respective levels. The performance based piece enables Veltri to delve into a tangled web of subject matter while entertaining the audience in a unique and challenging way. I really look forward to the final product and will keep you all posted on when and where you will be able to see it.

To learn more about P.M. Veltri check out his website www.pmveltri.com where all your cyber stalking needs will be satisfied. FYI, that was a joke…cyber stalking is not cool and neither is real life stalking for that matter!

TETRO is the latest "personal film" by Francis Ford Coppola. The film was released in June in the US, here I am withering away in Toronto in the hopes that it will be released for August 14th as promised/scheduled. I have been watching this film’s progress for a long time, almost secretly so as not to share it with anyone. Last Friday talking about digital at a going away party I mentioned it and was overwhelmed by guilt immediately afterwards. Unwarranted guilt is one of those things that never really goes away when you’re raised Catholic even if your folks aren’t exactly church going people. Back on track, what I was saying before the vortex in my mind got the better of me is that I have been waiting in great anxiety for this personal film from Coppola for very personal and selfish reasons; none of which are up for grabs in this preview–sorry suckers.

I have read endless reviews about this film and I don’t trust any of them good or bad: this is a movie I simply have to see for myself (like every other film, but, this one is extra special). The film is described as an unravelling of events that occurs when younger brother Bennie goes looking for his older brother Angie, now known as Tetro, a once promising writer. After ten years of incommunicado the two find themselves in Argentina where their family originally immigrated to from Italy. One brother’s need to know why the other left reveals an unnerving family history and the reasons why TETRO is the man he is when the audience first meets him. I realize people have become accustomed to the things that happen driving films but I believe in the kinds of films where things happen because people make them happen. TETRO at first glance appears to be a character driven picture and by the trailer Tetro seems to be a character I can relate to. I really look forward to this film and to the DVD as well.

Let’s talk cast for a moment shall we? Vincent Gallo, the most misunderstood and misinterpreted artist out of New York and in the mainstream generally speaking. I don’t know why this guy gets so much flack. If anyone ever watches or listens to a Vincent Gallo Interview you are sure to laugh till it hurts, smile like you mean it, and sigh out of sheer romantic inspiration. Two things that screw him in the eyes of the public are: his 20 years ahead of its time humour and his overall 50 years ahead of its time artistic expression. He’s got a unique on screen presence and a style completely his own not to mention an uncanny way to infuse audiences with a variety of emotions pleasant and unpleasant. If the actor by definition is to EFFECT and MOVE then why isn’t Vincent Gallo praised given how successful he is at just that? The rationale is beyond me and I’m happy for it. Coppola’s aces in my books for this casting choice. Then there’s Alden Ehrenreich who is just out of this world, where did they find this guy? I’m watching the trailer and behind the scenes footage (all found on Coppola’s own TETRO YouTube Channel) and thinking "really, you mean there is a chance for talented young actors to be cast in equally promising roles?". What do you expect from a kid who gets "discovered" by Spielberg at a batmitzvah? (according to imdb…) Then you have Maribel Verdú whom many of you will remember from Y Tu Mama Tambien, gorgeous and talented–who could ask for anything more? Wait, Klaus Maria Brandauer to play the father and head of the serpent so to speak. It’s like Uncle Francis dug up an alchemist and asked what are the ingredients to a great character driven film that is multi-genre and classic black and white while still being contemporary? The cast is the answer. This is how excited I am and I haven’t even watched it yet.

I can only wish, hope, and pray that someone from this film somehow gets a hold of this preview and finds it in their heart to send me a copy before the 14th so as to end my suffering. I know what you are all thinking: it’s a sad and lonely life she leads…You know what I say? You have no idea, and I say it with a smile.
